35 World Class Candidates for the Live Rounds in Singapore Announced!

The inaugural Singapore International Violin Competition has announced the 35 violinists from 14 countries who will come to Singapore in January 2015 to perform in the 9 live rounds across the city’s most prestigious concert venues. Over 148 applications were received from 27 countries, with applicants from China, USA, Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Singapore and Poland forming the bulk of the applications with many other European countries, Russia, Australia and Canada also represented, proving the truly global nature of the competition.

The 35 candidates will perform a selection of violin repertoire, including kilo, a commissioned work by Emily Koh, a Singaporean composer based in the United States. Among the 35 candidates (see full list following), are recent prize winners of Hannover, Indianapolis, Isang Yun, Pablo Sarasate and Sibelius Competitions. The competition will certainly be fierce. The competition winner will receive a First Prize of USD$50,000, a recording produced and distributed globally by Naxos, international performance opportunities with some of the worlds’ great orchestras and access to a 3- year instrument loan from the collection of fine rare instruments of Mr & Mrs Rin Kei Mei.

According to Qian Zhou, head of the jury of the Competition “The quality of the violinists who applied for the competition was outstanding and it was really difficult to select the candidates. We have a wonderful group of 35 candidates from around the world coming to Singapore to showcase their extraordinary talent to be appreciated and enjoyed by the Singapore community.”

The Singapore International Violin Competition was launched in June 2014 as a landmark cultural initiative for Singapore and South-East Asia. The international level competition serves as a showcase for aspiring professional violinists from around the world.
